Groups

Note that you need to be a member of Sutton u3a to join any of these study and interest groups. You can, however, visit a group just once to see if you like it before joining.

What groups are available?
Sutton u3a has over 50 interest groups (covering a range of activities) who meet regularly at various locations around the Sutton London borough. You can review the complete group list below and may also change the order to view alphabetically, by category, by day, or by venue (click on the oval blue buttons to select the required view).

How do I find out more about a specific group?
Each group has its own page. Click on the group title from the list below to see information about their activities, any requirements for taking part in the group and, in some cases, photographs of members engaged in learning and the practical results.

Where do groups meet?
Some groups hold their meetings at cafes, local halls or libraries, some at a member’s home while some organise regular trips to museums, galleries and places of interest. A full list of public group venues has been provided.

How do I join a group?
The fastest and easiest way is to visit that group's page (see list below), check the status (whether they are accepting new members) and send a message to the Group Leader via the group email address.

What do I do if if I am interested in a group and it is showing as 'full'?
Some groups may have a waiting list you can join, some may have an alternative group you can join. If there are no vacancies, however, you could always consider starting your own group (see below for details).

How much does it cost?
Your annual u3a subscription gives you access to all groups. Each group is different. Some activities are free, some share costs such as room hire or refreshments, while some activities such as a visit to a local museum or a coach outing are at cost.

How can I start a new group?
Groups are run for the members by the members; we are all volunteers. Groups can be run by one person, by a group of friends, or by a team. u3a is about sharing and members are encouraged to take an active part in the running of their respective groups where possible. You don't have to be an expert, just an enthusiastic member. If you have an interest that you would like to share with others, even just two or three others, then it's easy to start a new group. 

Guidelines for Group Leaders

Anyone interested in setting up a new Interest Group should talk to the Group Coordinator. A notice can then be put on this website in Group News and/or in the newsletter and an announcement can be made at the monthly meeting asking all those interested to put their names on a list.

If there is sufficient interest, an informal meeting can be arranged to discuss setting up the group. If you're a new group looking for a meeting spot, there's a list of regularly used venues above.

Once your group has formed you may request a new website page which will show all the relevant information, including the group's purpose, when and where you meet etc. You will need to complete a form which you can access by selecting the button below:

I'm a Group leader, how do I keep my group page up to date?
It's important to keep your group page information up to date. If you need to make alterations please use the online form which can be accessed via the button below. The form is simple and quick to fill in. There are a few mandatory fields (marked with an asterisk) but most are optional - to be completed as required.

The form also includes instructions for submitting photographs for your group page but please do check that all group members included in the pictures are happy for the photographs to be online. If you only want to submit photos and do not need to make any other changes, you can use the photo submission form by selecting the second button below.
