Creative Writing

Status:Active, open to new members
Coordinator:
Group email: Creative Writing group
When: On Wednesdays 10:30 am-12:30 pm
First Wednesday of the month.
Venue: Ibis Hotel Cafe - Sutton

The Group will meet once a month on the first Wednesday of the month, from 10.30 to 12.30am at Ibis Hotel Cafe-Sutton. The aim is to have no more than ten members in the Group.

In the belief that all writing is ‘creative’, Creative Writing can be fiction or non-fiction, taking many forms. Some genres we might cover include: short story; description, character-sketch, memoir, biography, essay, blog, travel writing, speech, article, writing for children.

At the end of each session, members will be given a writing topic (or a choice of topics) for the next meeting.

At the start of each session, members will read out their work and the group will comment:

  • no-one has to read out their work if they don’t wish to (or they can ask another member to read it out)
  • come to the meeting even if you haven’t completed any writing
  • always say something about others’ work and be supportive
  • send a typed copy (if possible) of your work to the Group Leader no less than one week before the next meeting
  • Group Leader will then send all the attachments to the Group so that members have the opportunity to read them before the meeting

To facilitate this system,

  • members exchange email addresses
  • work should be word-processed or if this is not possible, hand-written clearly
  • word-limit to be about 300 words initially
  • spelling, punctuation and grammar (SPAG) will not be commented on unless required

If time, we will have a short writing exercise during the meeting. Members can pair-up for this if preferred.

All levels of writing ability are valued: the emphasis is on u3a’s challenge to LEARN. We aim to have fun too!
