Basildon Park, built in 1783, is near Reading, Berkshire. It is a classical mansion looking over the Thames Valley towards the Chilterns. The grand Palladian villa is built of honey-coloured Bath stone, with a pedimented portico and massive columns dominating the 3 storey entrance looking over the park.
It has been through many owners and families who have lost money for all sorts of reasons, and it was left to decay for over 20 years from 1929. It was rescued by Lord and Lady Iliffe in 1952 and they restored it beautifully. The decoration in the hall and the magnificent staircase are unaltered from the original, and the grandest room is the Octagon Drawing Room.
There is a garden, rose garden, terrace, woodland walks, meadow and parkland.
There is a high flight of stairs to the entrance on the first floor. We will be given timed tickets for the house to ensure a comfortable tour. We have requested the buggy from car park to the house.
There is a shop and café and we have been requested to give numbers for those who want lunch or just cake and tea or coffee.
